From the windswept beaches of Dorset to the dramatic landscapes of Scotland, the UK has provided the perfect backdrop for countless iconic films. In this guide, explore the real locations featured in beloved movies like War Horse, Skyfall, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, and Watership Down.

From our pebbled beaches to snowy mountains paired with our modern and medieval architecture, the UK’s variety allows filmmakers to take audiences worldwide without having to jet across the globe to film—one nation with infinite possibilities.

But when we are sitting at home watching our favourite films, we often aren’t aware that the scenery we are looking at is a matter of hours, or sometimes, minutes away.

Whether these spots can liven up your daily walk or add to your holiday itinerary, there is nothing quite like seeing the backdrops from your favourite films come to life in front of you.

War Horse (2011)

Dartmoor National Park

Dartmoor National Park has endless beauty to offer visitors, regardless of season. When you’re among the trees it’s easy to understand why Steve Spielberg chose to shoot here.

Skyfall (2012)

Glencoe, Scotland

The Bond films, while flashy at times, have not been known for using dramatic cinematography. But that’s one of the reasons why Skyfall is a little different from the rest. What Bond fan would miss an opportunity to recreate this iconic frame?

Chitty Chitty Bang Bang (1968)

Dorset

A flying car, a failed inventor, and the ad venture of a lifetime. Why not stop by Chesil Beach to stick your toes in the water, enjoy the stunning view, and dream about owning a flying car?

Watership down (1978)

Hampshire

Despite being an animation, Watership Down was based on many real-life locations in and around Hampshire. The church, graveyard, and the many picturesque fields and hills the colony journeyed through still exist.
